Ian Foster Launches NÄRA Community, “Travelogue” Album

Share

Ian Foster views Newfoundland music as a vibrant tapestry woven from various colors and elements. Reflecting on his artistic journey, Foster emphasizes the importance of avoiding over-intellectualizing music’s connection to a place. His recent endeavors include establishing the NÄRA Community record label and releasing his latest album, “Travelogue,” to enhance Newfoundland’s musical landscape.

Known as an independent artist with insatiable curiosity, Ian Foster has transitioned from a singer-songwriter to a composer exploring atmospheric instrumental pieces inspired by renowned musicians like Brian Eno and Nils Frahm. With NÄRA Community, Foster aims to foster a platform for creating what he terms “modern cinematic music,” a genre that embraces diverse influences to innovate and captivate audiences.

The concept of Newfoundland music has evolved beyond traditional folk tunes, with artists like Figgy Duff and the Wonderful Grand Band pushing boundaries. Events like the Sound Symposium have catalyzed a shift towards innovative music experiences. Local musician Tiber Reardon lauds the Symposium for encouraging unconventional music that engages multiple senses beyond just auditory stimulation.

Despite the apparent contrast between modern cinematic music and traditional Newfoundland folk sounds, Foster and Reardon believe the province’s landscapes and culture fuel creativity. Foster envisions leveraging Newfoundland’s unique backdrop to inspire fresh musical expressions, while Reardon draws inspiration directly from the natural environment, composing music amidst scenic vistas.

Foster’s upcoming album, “Travelogue,” draws inspiration from his travels to Greece, capturing the essence of movement and exploration rather than traditional Greek melodies. Scheduled for release alongside the NÄRA Community launch, the album reflects Foster’s evolving artistic journey and his commitment to pushing creative boundaries.

To celebrate the album’s launch and the establishment of NÄRA Community, a special event is slated for Nov. 9 at Bannerman Brewery, offering a listening party with live performances and visuals, followed by a Q&A session with Foster and David Shears. The event promises a unique musical experience featuring guest artists Kira Sheppard, Nancy Hynes, and Amy Collyer-Holmes.
