Share

Firefighters successfully rescued a worker trapped under debris in a medieval tower that partially collapsed during renovation work in Rome. Despite the rescue efforts, the worker, identified as Octav Stroici, tragically passed away from his injuries. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed condolences for the loss and offered support to the victim’s family and colleagues during this difficult time.

Rescuers worked tirelessly for 11 hours to extract Stroici and another Romanian worker who was safely rescued. The operation faced challenges as the structure continued to give way, forcing rescuers to change tactics multiple times. Ultimately, they used a crane with giant tubes to clear rubble and successfully brought Stroici out on a stretcher.

The Torre dei Conti, which dates back to the 13th century, was undergoing an $11.1-million restoration before the collapse. Despite structural surveys confirming safety conditions for the renovation work, Italian prosecutors are investigating possible charges of negligence in the incident.

The tragic event drew attention from tourists who witnessed the rescue efforts, which were met with further structural collapses. The tower, closed since 2007, was on the verge of completing its restoration before the unforeseen incident. The community mourns the loss of Octav Stroici and sends thoughts to all those affected by the tragedy.
