Vanessa Gilles and Jonathan David have clinched the Canada Soccer Players of the Year award for the second consecutive year. Gilles, a central defender representing Germany’s Bayern Munich, triumphed over Adriana Leon from San Diego Wave and Jayde Riviere from Manchester United. David, a forward playing for Juventus in Italy, emerged victorious over Ali Ahmed from Vancouver Whitecaps and Tajon Buchanan from Villarreal. Both Gilles and David were jointly honored with the award after a vote by the media and Canada Soccer coaches.
David, previously named the 2024/25 CONCACAF Men’s Player of the Year, also secured the Canada award in 2019. Gilles celebrated her 50th appearance for Canada with a goal in a 2-0 victory against Mexico at the Pinatar Cup, where Canada clinched the tournament title. Gilles expressed her gratitude for being recognized as Canada Soccer’s women’s player of the year and highlighted her pride in representing the national team alongside exceptional role models.
The Ottawa native, aged 28, played a crucial role for Canada this year, particularly in the absence of Kadeisha Buchanan due to injury. Gilles featured in eight matches, starting six, leading Canada to a 4-3-1 record when she played. She mentioned the significance of the recognition amid personal and team challenges, emphasizing her commitment to helping the team progress.
Described as commanding the field with intelligence and leadership, Gilles’ impact in club football and for Canada has been lauded by coach Casey Stoney. With eight goals in 56 appearances for Canada, Gilles has established herself as an aerial threat. On the other hand, David showcased his prowess by featuring in all 14 Canada matches this year, scoring six goals and providing two assists. The skillful attacker, with 73 caps and 37 goals, has been a standout performer.
David’s impressive performances for Lille and Juventus have solidified his reputation as a professional, according to coach Jesse Marsch. Marsch commended David’s dedication to representing Canada, exemplified by his commitment during the Gold Cup without a professional contract. Noteworthy mentions for the award included Promise David, Richie Laryea, Tani Oluwaseyi, Niko Sigur, Dayne St. Clair, Marie-Yasmine Alidou, Emma Regan, Janine Sonis, Holly Ward, and Shelina Zadorsky.
In addition to the player awards, Olivia Chisholm and Luc De Fougerolles were named Young Players of the Year, while Duncan McDonald and Lea Palacio-Tellier received accolades in Para Soccer and Futsal respectively.
