More than 100 individuals, along with children and pets, sought shelter in the basement of a community hall for the second consecutive night as red tornado warnings alerted them on Saturday evening. Chris Stewart shared with CBC News that he was having dinner in Aquadeo, Sask., when the fire alarm went off once more. Aquadeo, situated 40 kilometers north of the Battlefords on Jackfish Lake, became the focal point for the concerned residents.
Initially, some children were anxious, but overall, the atmosphere remained calm as everyone gathered in the hall’s basement. Stewart estimated that there were over 100 people present on both occasions. The community hall served as a refuge for the residents as they waited out the tornado warnings.
Environment Canada reported that numerous communities in west-central Saskatchewan, including Turtleford, Glaslyn, Medstead, Edam, Paynton, Rabbit Lake, and Spiritwood, were under tornado warnings due to a slow-moving system colliding with another system from Alberta. Meteorologist Kyle Ziolkowski stated that while such occurrences are rare, they are not unusual.
Severe weather conditions ravaged Saskatchewan on Saturday, bringing heavy rainfall, hail ranging from ping-pong to golf ball-sized, and wind gusts reaching up to 90 km/h near North Battleford. Although no tornadoes were confirmed on Saturday night, Friday witnessed several tornado touchdowns.
Shannon Risling recalled spotting a tornado touching down near Jackfish Lake on Friday while enjoying the day at the beach with her daughter. She witnessed the tornado forming, touching down, lifting, and touching down again, remaining on the ground for approximately four minutes. Risling promptly contacted Environment Canada upon witnessing the tornado.
Ziolkowski emphasized the challenges of monitoring storms and the reliance on available data for accurate forecasting. Looking ahead, the forecast predicts a return to calmer conditions in the Prairies with a ridge of high pressure.
By Sunday morning, Stewart was back on the water enjoying clear skies and a fishing excursion, relieved that the weather had cleared up. The community remained vigilant yet hopeful for tranquil weather in the days to come.
