In a surprising turn of events, Jan Zabystran made history by clinching his first-ever World Cup victory at Val Gardena, Italy, beating out Swiss prodigy Marco Odermatt. The Czech skier, starting with bib number 29 and with only one top-10 finish in 56 previous races, triumphed by 0.22 seconds, under the advantageous late sunshine.

Zabystran’s triumph showcased not only luck but also skill, as he dominated both the bottom and top sections of the course. His unexpected win highlighted the unique nature of Val Gardena, where the late sunlight can dramatically affect race outcomes, as seen in this race.

Odermatt, who had been aggressive in his earlier run under darker lighting conditions, settled for second place. Giovanni Franzoni secured a career-best third place, with other lower-ranked racers like Matthieu Bailet and Christof Innerhofer also shining in the competition.

The victory marked a significant moment for Zabystran, who had struggled in previous World Cup events and Winter Olympics. Odermatt, on the other hand, maintained his dominant position in the overall World Cup standings and now leads the super-G rankings for the season.

The race also saw Brodie Seger as the top Canadian finisher, claiming the 14th spot. Zabystran’s win with bib number 29 echoed American skier Steven Nyman’s victory in 2012 with bib number 39, emphasizing the unpredictable nature of alpine skiing competitions.
