Obsession, a horror film from 2025, has exceeded expectations by becoming the highest-grossing movie despite its modest $750,000 US budget. Directed by 26-year-old Curry Barker, the film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September and hit theaters on May 15. It has been a box office sensation, raking in over $403 million US worldwide, with domestic earnings of more than $245 million US and international revenue surpassing $158 million US.

This achievement has propelled Obsession to the top of Focus Features’ success stories after being acquired for around $14 million US following its festival debut. The film’s popularity led the studio to delay its video-on-demand release, opting instead for a streaming platform launch on June 30, with plans for a Blu-ray 4K and DVD release on July 14.

Obsession follows the tale of Bear, played by Michael Johnston, a young man facing unrequited love for his friend Nikki, portrayed by Inde Navarrette. The plot takes a dark turn when Bear’s wish for Nikki’s affection using a mystical object backfires, leading to unsettling consequences.

The success of Obsession aligns with a broader trend in the film industry, exemplified by the rise of Gen Z filmmakers like 20-year-old Kane Parsons, director of the horror movie Backrooms (2026). This surge in young talent has sparked discussions on engaging scripts and audience appeal, with Michael Stasko, a filmmaker and professor, attributing Obsession’s triumph to its dynamic storytelling.

Barker’s path to success was paved through years of dedication on his YouTube channel, collaborating with his friend Cooper Tomlinson, who also stars in Obsession. The duo’s online presence, with approximately 1.5 million subscribers, demonstrated the power of authentic content creation in building a loyal audience, a strategy increasingly valued by film distributors.

Ernest Mathijs, a film studies professor, highlighted Barker and Parsons’s YouTube origins as a transformative force in the industry, noting their accelerated learning curve and innovative approaches to filmmaking. As Obsession continues to make waves, Barker is already working on a new project, Anything But Ghosts, set to expand the film’s universe, with plans for a remake of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and a potential anthology series exploring twisted wishes.

Obsession’s impact transcends the silver screen, positioning itself as a case study in contemporary filmmaking that is likely to resonate in academic circles, reflecting a new era of cinematic storytelling and audience engagement.
