Northern Ontario Farmers Thrive Despite Pumpkin Crop Crisis

Share

As dry weather wreaks havoc on pumpkin crops in much of Ontario this autumn, farmers in the northern region are reporting a different story, with their harvests mostly unaffected thanks to effective irrigation techniques and meticulous planning.

Recent data from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada indicates significant yield losses of up to 70% for some Ontario producers due to the prolonged dry spell experienced this summer. Jeff Warner, overseeing Aidie Creek Gardens near Englehart, where 1.2 to 1.6 hectares of pumpkins mature annually, credited their successful harvest to consistent watering through irrigation.

In Sturgeon Falls, Mitch Deschatelets, the manager at Leisure Farms, echoed a similar sentiment. Despite the arid conditions, Deschatelets mentioned that their pumpkins thrived due to regular watering and ample sunshine, resulting in an exceptional growing season.

Both farmers highlighted the increasing importance of irrigation in pumpkin cultivation in northern Ontario, with Deschatelets estimating that their farm relies on irrigation in about half of the years, depending on rainfall patterns.

Despite the favorable conditions this year, cultivating pumpkins in northern Ontario remains a challenging endeavor. Warner emphasized the significance of selecting pumpkin varieties with shorter “days to harvest” to fit within the region’s growing season, acknowledging that pumpkins are not a lucrative venture but rather an integral part of their farm’s seasonal activities.

At Aidie Creek Gardens, which produces 3,000 to 4,000 pumpkins annually, the focus is on hosting “fall fun days” where families can engage in pumpkin picking and navigate through a corn maze, with pumpkins serving as a central attraction.

Overall, the successful pumpkin harvest in northern Ontario underscores the critical role of irrigation and strategic planning in mitigating the impact of adverse weather conditions on agricultural production.
