The Toronto International Film Festival kicked off its festivities by unveiling five remarkable films for this year’s edition, marking a significant development following the earlier announcements of the opening-night feature and gala presentations. Among the highlights of the 51st festival are the premieres of the star-studded sci-fi comedy “Alpha Gang,” the Argentinian revenge thriller “Glaxo,” the romance film “Love of Your Life” starring Margaret Qualley, the Nazi hunting drama “The Housewife,” and the action-packed film “Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother” featuring Mahershala Ali.
“Alpha Gang” is set to have its international debut at the festival, indicating its first screening outside its home country. Industry experts anticipate an earlier world premiere at the Telluride film festival for this American production. The remaining four films are scheduled for their world premieres at TIFF.
Directed by the Zellner brothers, “Alpha Gang” follows a group of aliens disguised as a 1950s biker gang on a mission to conquer Earth. However, their plans take an unexpected turn when they confront the power of human emotions. Originally announced in October 2024, the film underwent several delays and cast changes, with the current lineup including Chris Pine, Lily-Rose Depp, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Cate Blanchett, Dave Bautista, Riley Keough, and Léa Seydoux.
Adapted from a novel by Hernán Ronsino, the Argentinian drama “Glaxo” focuses on a small-town narrative revolving around the arrival of a policeman and his wife, triggering a chain reaction of desire and revenge. Director Benjamin Naishtat, known for his social and political themes, is expected to delve into Argentina’s historical turmoil in the film set in the 1950s-1980s.
“Love of Your Life” features Margaret Qualley and Patrick Schwarzenegger in a poignant tale of loss and romance. Produced by Ryan Gosling and helmed by director Rachel Morrison, the film promises an emotional journey as a widow attempts to reconnect with a past love. Gabriel Basso has recently joined the cast.
“The Housewife,” directed by Ben Shirinian, portrays a psychological drama inspired by a true story of a journalist investigating a suspected Nazi officer in 1964 New York. The narrative takes a twist when the journalist befriends the officer’s wife, played by Naomi Watts alongside Tye Sheridan, Michael Imperioli, and Norman Reedus.
In “Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother,” Mahershala Ali portrays a devout hitman navigating a dangerous path in Houston after his wife’s death. Directed by Bassam Tariq, the film promises an intense and visually striking experience, with a teaser trailer already generating buzz. Giancarlo Esposito, John Cho, and Tramell Tillman also star in the production slated for a fall theatrical release.
TIFF had previously disclosed that Siân Heder’s “Being Heumann” would open the festival, with “Prima Facie” and “The Assassin(s)” as gala premieres. The festival is scheduled to run from September 10 to 20, with the complete lineup set to be revealed on August 11. Ticket sales will commence for TIFF members on August 21 and for the general public on August 31.
