WestJet is offering passengers with flights booked between July 30 and August 4 the chance to change or cancel their reservations once without incurring any fees. The airline, headquartered in Calgary, introduced this policy to provide travelers with more flexibility and peace of mind regarding their upcoming travel plans amidst an ongoing labor disagreement with flight attendants.
Earlier this month, WestJet’s flight attendants voted overwhelmingly at 99.4% in favor of a potential strike. This vote allows approximately 4,400 union members represented by CUPE Local 8125 to legally go on strike starting on August 2.
WestJet communicated to its WestJet Rewards members via email, expressing their belief in achieving a resolution without disrupting guests, although acknowledging the apprehension caused by uncertainties in travel plans.
CUPE 8125 president, Alia Hussain, spoke to CBC News, describing WestJet’s initiative as positive given the current circumstances. She emphasized that while the airline’s action doesn’t confirm an impending strike, it demonstrates responsible business conduct.
The airline faced a significant labor dispute in the summer of 2024 when unionized airline mechanics went on strike over the Canada Day long weekend, affecting a large number of travelers. WestJet affirmed its commitment to negotiations and readiness to implement substantial improvements beneficial to cabin crew while ensuring WestJet’s future sustainability.
