Three Indigenous men from Saskatchewan who served in the Canadian Armed Forces are reflecting on the significance of National Indigenous Veterans Day on November 8.
Mahekan Ahenakew, hailing from Ahatahkakoop Cree Nation, emphasized how his traditional upbringing gave him unique skills during his time in the Canadian Army. Ahenakew, who enlisted at 17 after being inspired at a powwow in Regina, appreciated the camaraderie and brotherhood within the military.
Having served in various regiments and deploying to Afghanistan in 2009, Ahenakew now uses his experiences to educate and inspire others in his community through survival training.
Evan Taypotat, the chief of Kahkewistahaw First Nation, was recently appointed an honorary colonel for the Snowbirds after his service in Afghanistan. Taypotat highlighted the importance of Indigenous Veterans Day in recognizing the sacrifices made by Indigenous veterans.
Cy Standing, who joined the Royal Canadian Air Force at 18, reminisced about his overseas experiences and the importance of honoring historical Indigenous figures who defended their land and way of life.
