These discussions are crucial as the U.S. is set to impose 50% tariffs on certain Canadian goods starting on August 19. The tariffs are a response to perceived Canadian retaliation against U.S. trade policies, particularly concerning motor vehicles, dairy, and alcohol.
While certain sectors like energy, potash, critical minerals, and fish are exempt, other products previously tariff-free under CUSMA would be affected. Trump also hinted at implementing additional tariffs on Canadian goods due to wildfire smoke reaching the U.S.
Carney clarified Canada’s efforts in addressing wildfires to the U.S. president, highlighting the vast forested areas in Canada and the challenging drought conditions affecting the region.
