Despite his skepticism, the animal did indeed resemble a lion. As it turned out, the mysterious creature was not a lion but a brown Newfoundland dog styled to look like a lion.
The unusual saga began when workers from O’Reilly’s forest management company in County Clare, Ireland, noticed a large animal moving around the woods. They managed to capture the animal on camera, leading to the viral video that showcased the dog with a lion-like appearance.
Although lions are not native to Ireland, O’Reilly couldn’t ignore the striking resemblance. He suspected it might be someone’s pet with an exotic haircut. This prompted him to inform the local police, who later confirmed that the “lion” was, in fact, a Newfoundland dog named Mouse with a unique haircut.
Mouse’s owners have not come forward, leaving O’Reilly pondering the reason behind the dog’s unusual grooming. While some speculate it might have been trimmed for Halloween, experts warn against shaving Newfoundland dogs’ thick coats, as it can lead to health issues.
Despite the mix-up, Mouse seems to be enjoying his newfound fame, with the police reporting that he is “delighted with his recent viral video clip.” This incident is reminiscent of past cases where dogs have been mistaken for other animals due to creative grooming, highlighting the unexpected surprises that pets can bring.
