Sherry Mermuys from West Covehead has spent the last few weeks tuning in to the Toronto Blue Jays’ playoff matches alongside her son and daughter-in-law. Prior to Game 5 of the World Series in Los Angeles, while engaged in a card game with her family, she received an unexpected video call from her daughter in Ottawa. The revelation was that if the World Series extended to Game 7 in Toronto, Mermuys had a ticket in hand. Her daughter and son-in-law swiftly secured the tickets online as soon as they were available for purchase, and the entire family was informed but sworn to secrecy for several days.
Expressing her astonishment, Mermuys recalled her initial disbelief upon learning the news, exclaiming, “I was just flabbergasted… I couldn’t believe it. I was just shocked.” Being a dedicated fan of the Blue Jays since 2012, Mermuys, who had never attended a game in person, reminisced about her childhood days playing baseball with her siblings and neighborhood friends, citing fond memories of watching the team’s consecutive championship wins in 1992 and 1993.
However, the thrill of potentially witnessing Game 7 created a unique dilemma for Mermuys during Game 6, as she needed the Blue Jays to lose for the deciding match to take place. Ultimately, the Dodgers emerged victorious with a 3-1 score. Reflecting on the conflicting emotions during the game, she confessed, “It was so confusing because I would cheer for the Jays when they did good… Not that I cheered for the Dodgers, but I was like, OK, this is inning number four, this is inning number five…”
Tonight, Mermuys will attend the highly anticipated Game 7 at Rogers Centre in Toronto alongside her daughter and son-in-law. Anticipating the unpredictable nature of sports, she expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to share the experience with her family, emphasizing, “You never know what’s gonna happen and how quickly it’ll change… It’ll mean so much to me to be there with my family… I just have the best family. My kids are the best.”
