Mac Marcoux Named Honorary Captain of Canada’s Paralympic Team

Former Para alpine skier Mac Marcoux has been appointed as the honorary captain of Canada’s Paralympic team for the upcoming Milan-Cortina Games, as announced by the Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC) on Wednesday. In addition to Marcoux, five athletes will serve as co-captains, including wheelchair curler Ina Forrest, hockey player Tyler McGregor, nordic skier Brittany Hudak, snowboarder Tyler Turner, and alpine skier Alexis Guimond. These athletes will act as key figures for the Canadian Paralympic Team, sharing stories and connecting with fans.

In a departure from past practices, the CPC has introduced these new leadership roles to emphasize the importance of athlete leadership during the Games. Catherine Gosselin-Despres, Chief Sport Officer of the Canadian Paralympic Committee, praised the selected athletes for their experience, dedication to Para sport, and leadership qualities. Marcoux, a six-time Paralympic medallist from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., brings valuable experience and passion to his role as honorary captain.

Marcoux expressed his excitement about the appointment, highlighting the privilege of representing Team Canada and sharing the journey of his fellow Paralympians. The co-captains, with a combined total of 13 Paralympic medals, are respected figures in their respective sports. Forrest, preparing for her fifth Paralympics, is particularly noted for her achievements in wheelchair curling, having won multiple medals and served on the Canadian Paralympic Athletes’ Council.

McGregor, a successful Para hockey player, emphasized the honor of being a co-captain and the values of excellence and unity that Team Canada represents. Guimond, known for his consistency and achievements in Para alpine skiing, sees his role as carrying the hopes of a nation and overcoming challenges with determination. Hudak, a veteran Para nordic athlete, underscored the responsibility of leading by example and fostering team spirit.

Turner, who made history with Canada’s first Para snowboarding gold medal, is committed to representing the team with pride and promoting Para sport. The Milan-Cortina Paralympics, scheduled from March 6-15, will showcase athletes competing in various disciplines such as alpine skiing, hockey, snowboarding, wheelchair curling, and nordic skiing. The official Canadian team members for the Games will be announced in the coming months.
