Mervyn Perry went to bed one night in May 2023 unaware of a tire being set on fire on his property in Barrington, N.S. This incident later escalated into the largest wildfire in the province’s history.
Court records from Dalton Stewart’s recent sentencing, charged under the Forests Act, disclosed that it was Perry’s land near Barrington Lake where the tire fire occurred. Perry only realized the fire was on his property after noticing smoke and hearing about it on social media, as it started several kilometers away from his residence.
Stewart, who pleaded guilty to a Forests Act violation, received a $25,000 fine on Oct. 16. The court documents detailed how Stewart, while drinking with friends on May 25, used cardboard and motor oil to ignite the fire near Homer’s Rock, a local landmark. Despite attempting to extinguish the flames before leaving, Stewart failed to ensure they were fully out.
The wildfire eventually ravaged over 23,000 hectares, causing extensive destruction and displacing numerous residents. Although Perry’s home and cottage were spared, many trees on his land suffered fire damage. Perry expressed disappointment over the devastation but acknowledged the uncontrollable circumstances, including strong winds and dry conditions.
The $25,000 fine for Stewart was deemed significant and fair by the Crown during the sentencing, with no additional charges brought against others involved. Volunteer firefighter Kevin Doane, who lost equipment in the fire, believed the consequences warranted a more severe penalty, considering the emotional and physical toll on the community.
As the affected areas recover, Perry remains hopeful that his land will regenerate for future generations to enjoy, despite the irreversible damage caused by the wildfire.
