Sheeran expressed his dismay over the Israel-Palestine conflict, labeling it a “human tragedy” affecting both sides but chose not to take a public position. Despite attributing Macklemore’s removal to venues and promoters, supporting acts Aaron Rowe, Lukas Graham, Beoga, and Finneas decided to stand in solidarity with Palestinians, leading to the tour having no opening acts.
Following concerns raised by venues after Macklemore’s performances at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium, where he voiced support for Palestinians, the decision was made to remove him from the tour. Videos of the performances, including the rapper chanting “Free Palestine” and expressing solidarity with Palestinians, sparked criticism from pro-Israel groups.
In a statement, Sheeran clarified that Macklemore’s removal was the promoter’s decision, not his own. Despite efforts to mediate, venues remained firm in their stance. The supporting acts, including Aaron Rowe and Beoga, cited historical injustices in Ireland and their commitment to justice as reasons for dropping out of the tour.
Danish artist Lukas Graham and Finneas also announced their departure from the tour in support of Macklemore and the Palestinian cause. Macklemore emphasized the importance of speaking out against oppression and standing up for the oppressed in his statement.
The situation has drawn attention to the challenges faced by artists who speak out on sensitive issues, with some facing backlash or scrutiny for their views.
