“DND Radar Project Threatens Ontario Farmers’ Livelihoods”

Rachel Brooks and her family were living peacefully on their 40-hectare farm, located 130 kilometers north of Toronto, until they received an unexpected letter from the Department of National Defence (DND). The letter raised concerns about the security of their property and the potential impact on their livelihood that a large-scale radar project could have.

DND sent similar letters to Brooks and several other farmers in the area, inquiring about the possibility of selling their properties to make room for the radar project. Brooks, who has been a vocal opponent of the project, expressed her firm stance against selling her land, which has been a labor of love for her family for the past 45 years.

The proposed radar project aims to construct a massive site spanning over 1,600 hectares in Clearview Township, near Stayner, Ontario. This initiative, known as the Arctic Over-the-Horizon Radar (A-OTHR), is part of a significant $38-billion investment to enhance Canada’s contribution to NORAD.

The uncertainty surrounding the project has left many farmers, including the Hutchinson family, in a state of limbo. Matt Hutchinson, the fifth-generation farmer on their property, expressed his concerns about the potential loss of their farm, which has been in the family since 1879. The Hutchinsons, like many others in the community, are struggling to plan for the future amidst the project’s looming presence.

While DND has acquired a portion of the land required for the project, it still needs to purchase additional hectares, raising questions about the fate of farmers who refuse to sell. DND has assured fair compensation and a smooth acquisition process but has not ruled out the possibility of expropriation if agreements cannot be reached.

Local residents, along with MP Terry Dowdall, have been seeking clarity from the government regarding the project’s implications and the fate of farmland in the area. Concerns have been raised about the selection of the site and the potential loss of valuable agricultural land that has been a cornerstone of the community’s identity.

As the community grapples with uncertainty and anxiety, residents are determined to seek answers and safeguard their way of life against the backdrop of a project that could reshape their agricultural landscape.
