Share

A group of activists involved in a convoy aiming to break through the Israeli blockade of Gaza reported on Wednesday that several of their vessels sustained damage from drones while sailing near Greece. The Global Sumud Flotilla disclosed that during the night, they were targeted by unidentified drones and experienced disruptions in communications. They noted hearing about 13 explosions in the vicinity of multiple convoy boats, with unknown objects being dropped on at least 10 vessels.

Although no injuries were documented, the ships suffered harm and encountered extensive communication interference. A video shared on the convoy’s social media displayed what seemed to be an explosion near one of the ships, with no distress calls reported to Greece’s Coast Guard.

The foreign ministry reiterated an offer for the convoy to unload humanitarian assistance at an Israeli port for transport to Gaza or face repercussions. The ministry emphasized that Israel would not permit the entry of vessels into a combat zone or any breach of the lawful naval blockade.

Italy denounced the attack and deployed a navy frigate for potential rescue efforts, with the frigate Fasan en route to the area. The Italian Defence Minister activated the frigate in response to the incident, ensuring readiness for any necessary rescue operations.

The European Union cautioned against the use of force and upheld the freedom of navigation under international law. The EU spokesperson emphasized the need to respect the humanitarian mission of the convoy and avoid any form of aggression.

The UN Human Rights Office called for an independent investigation into the reported drone attacks on the convoy, condemning the threats and assaults on those attempting to provide aid to the distressed population in Gaza.

One of the activists on board, Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, labeled the attacks as a “scare tactic” and urged supporters to remain focused on Gaza. She underscored the ongoing assessment of the damage inflicted on the convoy, emphasizing the determination to continue their mission despite the risks.

Simone Zambrin, an Italian activist with the convoy, described the continuous presence of drones over their convoy and the damage caused to their boats. The convoy, comprising boats from various nations, carries symbolic humanitarian aid, including food and medication, for the people of Gaza.

The convoy has faced several attacks since departing from Spain, including incidents in Tunisian waters. It represents one of the largest endeavors to challenge the Israeli blockade of Gaza, which has endured for 18 years, preceding the current conflict in Gaza.

The prolonged conflict in Gaza has resulted in significant casualties, with the blockade exacerbating a dire humanitarian situation. Concerns over famine in Gaza have escalated, prompting mass displacement and heightened aid needs for the vulnerable population.

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has led to substantial civilian casualties and humanitarian crises, underscoring the urgency of addressing the humanitarian plight in Gaza. The convoy’s mission to provide aid to Gaza remains pivotal in light of the escalating crisis.

Instances of activists facing attacks while attempting to breach the Israeli blockade of Gaza are not unprecedented, with past incidents highlighting the risks involved in such endeavors. The history of confrontations underscores the complexities and challenges surrounding efforts to deliver aid to Gaza.
