“Alberta Aims to Define Its Whisky Identity”

What factors contribute to the unique taste of whisky in Alberta? Is it the water quality, the type of barley used, or perhaps the influence of the Chinook winds in the region?

However, the Alberta government is aiming to address this. Recently, Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction Minister Dale Nally have been assigned the task of establishing the guidelines for a product to be officially recognized as Alberta whisky.

When questioned about their interpretation of this designation, distillers present varying viewpoints.

In Diamond Valley, situated south of Calgary, David Farran, the president and CEO of Eau Claire Distillery, reflects on the evolution of the local whisky market. Eau Claire Distillery, operational for over ten years, boasts a rich history in the industry.

Farran believes that Alberta possesses all the necessary elements to produce exceptional whisky, such as its premium barley and well-suited climate. He anticipates that upcoming reforms could enhance the recognition of Alberta’s whisky-making potential.

Farran remarked, “Alberta whisky has not historically been recognized as a top-tier spirit globally. It has often been overlooked and undervalued.” He envisions establishing Alberta as a producer of premium and super-premium whisky.
