Long-time politician Steve Butland, who served as mayor and member of Parliament in Sault Ste. Marie, passed away at the age of 84 on October 15. Over his more than 30-year career in public service, he held various roles, including MP from 1988-1993, mayor from 1996-2000, and city councillor from 1980-1988 and 2003-2018.
Butland received accolades for his service, such as the city’s Medal of Merit in 2018 and the Key to the City in 2025. Sault Mayor Matthew Shoemaker praised Butland’s dedication and impact on the community, highlighting his commitment to improving the lives of Sault Ste. Marie residents.
Survived by his wife and daughters, Butland shared in a 2018 interview that his time in federal politics was challenging but rewarding. He later redirected his focus to local governance, emphasizing the importance of municipal politics in connecting with the community.
Reflecting on his accomplishments, Butland mentioned his role in projects like the Essar Centre, city welcome signs, and the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre. With a background in education, he spent 34 years as a teacher and principal, leaving a lasting impression on his students.
In honor of Butland, flags at city facilities will be lowered, recognizing his significant contributions to the community. A book of condolences will be available at the Civic Centre for public tributes from October 21-27.
