As the Toronto Blue Jays gear up for their first World Series game, establishments selling sports merchandise in the Waterloo region and beyond are experiencing an influx of customers. The Blue Jays secured their spot in the World Series by defeating the Seattle Mariners 4-3 in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series on Monday night. They are set to face off against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 1 on Friday.

Shaina Schlegel, a manager at Bobby O’Brien’s pub and restaurant in downtown Kitchener, noted an increase of approximately 50 customers during the final games against the Mariners. The pub, equipped with multiple TVs indoors and a large outdoor screen, has been bustling with patrons showing their support for the team.

Jay Taylor, co-owner of Morty’s Pub in Waterloo, echoed similar sentiments, mentioning a boost in sales during the games and plans to offer wing and beer specials whenever the Blue Jays play. Taylor emphasized the positive impact of the Blue Jays’ successful run, especially in light of the challenges faced by businesses during the pandemic.

Dan Maheux, owner of B&K Collectables in Kitchener, reported a 25% rise in sales of Blue Jays toys over the past two weeks, with particular interest in Funko Pop figurines. The store carries a variety of Blue Jays Funko Pops, including versions of popular players and the team mascot, Ace. Maheux anticipates a surge in demand for these items following heightened media coverage of the team’s achievements.

At the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in St. Marys, director of operations Scott Crawford observed an increase in foot traffic, attributing it to the heightened interest in baseball sparked by the Blue Jays’ success. The museum showcases various baseball artifacts, including items related to iconic moments in Blue Jays history. Visitors have been actively purchasing memorabilia from the gift shop, showing their enthusiasm for the sport.

With the Blue Jays’ momentum building, establishments in the Waterloo region are gearing up to support the team and cater to the growing interest in baseball among fans.
