Canada’s Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson were defeated in the quarterfinals of the beach volleyball world championships in Adelaide, Australia on Friday. The Brazilian duo of Rebecca Cavalcante and Carol Solberg secured a 2-1 victory (17-21, 21-18, 9-15) over the Olympic silver medallists.

Despite entering the elimination round with an unblemished record and not having dropped a set all week, the Canadians succumbed to the pressure exerted by Brazil. Wilkerson acknowledged Brazil’s ability to capitalize on Canada’s mistakes, which were uncommon in earlier matches, attributing them to slight disorganization that they can address through focused improvement.

During the match, Brazil maintained an advantage in attack points with a tally of 38 compared to Canada’s 31, and also out-blocked the Canadian team by a margin of 4-1. However, Canada led in aces, recording four to Brazil’s two.

Humana-Paredes expressed disappointment in their defensive performance, noting the absence of critical defensive plays that had been a strength throughout the week. Despite the setback, both players emphasized the learning opportunities from the loss, with Humana-Paredes highlighting the growth potential it offers.

The Canadian team finished the tournament in fifth place, looking to leverage the experience gained for future competitions. Wilkerson acknowledged the challenges of the post-Olympic year but emphasized their team’s resilience and determination to remain competitive. The world championships will conclude on Sunday with the medal matches.
