Britney Spears was taken into custody in Southern California on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, as reported by state and local authorities. The incident occurred when California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers stopped Spears on Wednesday evening for allegedly speeding and driving erratically in a black BMW. Following the stop, the pop star underwent several field sobriety tests and was subsequently arrested for suspected driving under the influence of a mix of drugs and alcohol.
After her arrest, Spears was processed at a detention facility around 3 a.m. on Thursday and was released at approximately 6 a.m., as confirmed by the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office. The CHP mentioned that the case is still being investigated, and the results of chemical tests are pending. A court appearance has been set for May 4.
Britney Spears, originally from Mississippi and raised in Louisiana, gained fame as a teenage pop icon who rose to prominence in the 1990s and 2000s. Transitioning from Disney Channel’s The Mickey Mouse Club to MTV, she became a cultural phenomenon with hit songs like Hit Me Baby One More Time, Oops! I Did It Again, and Toxic.
Throughout the 2000s, Spears faced challenges with her mental well-being and substance abuse, leading to a period of hospitalization in 2008. Recent years have seen public scrutiny over the conservatorship that granted her father, James Spears, control over her affairs and finances. This scrutiny led to the “Free Britney” movement and a documentary highlighting her legal battle with her father.
In a significant development in 2021, a judge terminated the conservatorship, marking a significant victory for the pop star.
