Britney Spears, represented by her lawyer Michael A. Goldstein, entered a plea of guilty on Monday to a reduced charge in a Southern California court, avoiding jail time. The charge stemmed from accusations of her driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. The 44-year-old singer did not appear in Ventura County court in person. Instead, her lawyer agreed to a “wet reckless” plea deal on her behalf. This plea deal entails a year of probation, mandatory attendance at a DUI class, and fines imposed by the state.
According to the county district attorney’s office, this plea offer is customary for individuals without a history of DUI offenses, no involvement in accidents or injuries while driving, and a low blood-alcohol level. It is particularly common for defendants who demonstrate a willingness to address their issues and seek help, as Spears did by voluntarily entering a substance abuse treatment facility in April.
Following the hearing, Goldstein expressed that while no one is pleased about pleading guilty, it was necessary to move forward positively. He acknowledged the district attorney’s recognition of Britney’s efforts to better herself. Goldstein clarified that Spears completed her rehabilitation program and refuted claims of her early departure. When asked about her future plans, he responded, “I don’t know, I’m sure a lot.”
During the court proceedings, Spears received summary probation, which does not involve mandatory meetings with a parole officer. She temporarily waived her Fourth Amendment rights concerning search and seizure if pulled over, requiring her to comply with searches and sobriety tests. However, this waiver does not apply to her residence, as specified by the judge upon Goldstein’s request.
District Attorney Erik Nasarenko commended Spears for taking full responsibility for her actions. He stressed the severity of DUI offenses and emphasized the importance of adhering to court-mandated requirements, which include ongoing substance abuse treatment, regular therapy sessions, and monthly visits with a psychiatrist to prevent reoffending.
Britney Spears faced a single misdemeanor DUI charge and was not obligated to attend her arraignment. The incident attracted significant media attention, given her celebrity status. Spears resides in Ventura County, where the arrest took place on March 4. Her representatives previously condemned her actions as inexcusable and hoped it would prompt positive changes in her life. Since being charged, neither Spears nor her representatives have issued statements.
The California Highway Patrol reported that Spears was pulled over for erratic driving on U.S. 101 in her black BMW. Subsequently, she underwent field sobriety tests, leading to her arrest and detention. The criminal complaint indicated the presence of alcohol and drugs in her system without specifying the substances or her blood alcohol content.
