Actor Nicholas Brendon, known for his role as Xander Harris on the television series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” has passed away, as confirmed by his family through a social media post. The statement shared on Brendon’s Instagram account mentioned that he died peacefully in his sleep due to natural causes.

Industry publications such as The Hollywood Reporter, Deadline, and Variety reported on Brendon’s demise at the age of 54, based on the family’s announcement. Brendon portrayed the character Xander Harris, a quirky and loyal companion to the protagonist in “Buffy,” a pioneering show that redefined conventional TV programming.

Aside from his iconic role in “Buffy,” Brendon also appeared as Kevin Lynch, a tech expert at the FBI in “Criminal Minds” from 2007 to 2014. He had guest appearances in “Private Practice” and featured in the short-lived series “Kitchen Confidential,” inspired by Anthony Bourdain’s book.

Acknowledged for his candid discussions about addiction and mental health challenges, Brendon faced legal issues post his time on “Buffy.” Despite ongoing personal struggles, his acting career continued with various projects.

A reboot of “Buffy” was in development for Hulu, with Chloe Zhao set to direct. Nevertheless, Sarah Michelle Gellar, the original show’s lead, revealed the cancellation of the reboot earlier this week.
