“Calgary Embraces Blue Jays Fever Amid World Series Hype”

Share

A fresh wave of Calgary baseball enthusiasts is throwing their support behind the Toronto Blue Jays as the team competes in the World Series for the first time since 1993. Among them is twelve-year-old Luke Derix, a devoted Jays fan and player, who is thrilled with the team’s current performance, especially their remarkable comeback win in the American League Championship Series. Derix’s excitement even led to a playful sibling rivalry in his household, with his brother supporting the Mariners and requesting quiet during games.

The Blue Jays’ playoff journey has ignited interest in baseball across Calgary, with local coaches and organizers anticipating a surge in young players like Derix joining the sport next season. Fish Creek Little League in southeast Calgary, catering to children aged four to 16, is preparing for a 10 to 15 percent increase in registrations. According to Jason Mykes, the league’s president, the team’s success and media coverage directly impact participation rates.

Derix’s circle of friends is also catching the baseball bug, with some previously hockey-focused pals now showing interest in the sport after following the Blue Jays’ playoff matches closely. The impact is evident at Absolute Sports, an indoor baseball training facility in the northwest, where general manager Colin Moro noted a rise in young participants during the ongoing teachers’ strike. Moro anticipates sustained growth in player numbers well beyond the World Series, drawing parallels to increased interest observed during the team’s successful run in 2015/2016.
