A Calgary man, Kyle Thompson, has been charged with hate-motivated assaults for the second time this week after allegedly attacking two separate families earlier this year, according to police reports.
Thompson, 32, is facing charges of assault and assault causing bodily harm related to an incident that occurred in June 2025. He was previously charged earlier in the week with uttering threats and three counts of assault in another attack.
Authorities stated that both assaults were motivated by hate. If convicted, the prosecution could use the hate motivation as an aggravating factor during sentencing, potentially resulting in a harsher punishment.
Two Attacks Occurred in Quick Succession
The two incidents occurred within close proximity to each other, with the first happening on June 24. A man and woman were walking across a crosswalk at Southland Drive and Southport Road S.W. when they were approached by a stranger who proceeded to physically assault the man. The suspect reportedly made a racial comment before fleeing the scene.
The second incident took place on July 3, as a woman and her family were walking along Fourth Street S.W. near 10th Avenue. A man across the street started hurling racist remarks at them. Subsequently, he crossed the street towards the family, threatening them. The woman stepped forward to shield her family and was then assaulted by the individual.
Efforts to Apprehend the Suspect
Following the release of information by the police to locate the suspect, Kyle Thompson surrendered himself. Subsequently, he was also charged for the June assault. Thompson is scheduled to appear in court next week and has no known previous convictions in Alberta.
Authorities are urging the public to report any incidents of hate-motivated crimes they witness. In a statement, the police emphasized a zero-tolerance policy towards hate, stating that such crimes, including assault, theft, and vandalism, are recognizable when motivated by bias, prejudice, or hate.
