Moderated by Loren McGinnis from The Calgary Eyeopener, CBC Calgary hosted the debate at the Red and White Club at McMahon Stadium. Improving public safety emerged as a key focus, with concerns over rising crime rates and police shortages. Each candidate presented their strategies, with Sharp advocating for hiring 500 more police officers, while Thiessen and Davison offered differing perspectives on the approach needed.
Population growth and housing challenges were another central theme of the debate, as Calgary’s population nears the two million mark. The candidates shared their views on managing growth sustainably, with Davison proposing a tax freeze and Gondek highlighting the need for affordable housing solutions.
The issue of blanket rezoning, allowing townhomes and row houses in residential areas without rezoning, sparked debate among the candidates. Sharp and Davison pledged to repeal the policy, while Gondek emphasized its role in a broader housing strategy. Farkas called for rebuilding trust between the council and the community while advocating for necessary housing development.
