Katie Cosgriffe secured Canada’s final medal at the Para swimming world championships in Singapore by earning a silver in the women’s 100-meter backstroke event on Saturday. This marked her second medal of the competition, following a bronze in the 100-meter butterfly earlier. In total, Canada’s team concluded the seven-day championship with a total of twelve medals, including two gold medals.
Mary Jibb from Muskoka, Ontario, and Danielle Dorris from Moncton, New Brunswick, stood out with each collecting three medals, including a gold each. Competing in the S10 category, Cosgriffe finished fifth in the 100 backstroke at the previous Paralympic Games in Paris. Reflecting on her performance, Cosgriffe expressed determination to improve after her disappointing Paris result and emphasized her focus on the recent competition.
Despite aiming for gold, Cosgriffe acknowledged the tough competition from Defne Kurt of Turkey, who clinched the top spot. Cosgriffe’s time of 1:07.37 was a personal best but fell slightly short of the gold. She expressed contentment with her performance and was pleased to secure a medal at the event. Canada’s coach, Ryan Allen, commended the team’s efforts and highlighted the new talent that emerged during the championship, praising their achievements and commitment to excellence.
Featuring 19 swimmers, Canada was among 580 athletes from 75 countries participating in the championship at the OCBC Aquatic Centre, the first world para swim event held in Asia. Coach Allen praised the team’s preparation and performance, noting the abundance of personal bests achieved by the swimmers. The competition showcased the team’s dedication and marked a successful outing for Canadian para swimmers on the international stage.
