Canada advanced to the knockout stage of the FIFA U-17 World Cup for the first time in their ninth tournament appearance despite a 2-1 loss to Chile in the Group K finale. The young Canadian team secured a spot in the Round of 32, finishing second in the group behind France. Uganda’s surprise victory over France also helped Canada qualify despite finishing with the same points as Uganda and Chile.

In the upcoming Round of 32, Canada will face Ireland, who finished on top of Group J. This year marked a significant improvement for Canada, who had never won a game in their previous eight appearances at the tournament.

After a dramatic game with late goals and penalties, Canada secured their place in the knockout stage. Coach Mike Vitulano praised the team’s resilience and determination, highlighting the historic achievement of reaching this stage of the competition. Chile, who had a chance to score in stoppage time, missed an opportunity to seal the victory.

The tournament, held at the Aspire Zone complex, will continue until November 27, with the final set to take place at Khalifa International Stadium. The game between Canada and Chile was filled with late drama, including a goal-line clearance and a red card for a Chilean player.
