Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand stated that during her discussions with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, there was no mention or hint of President Donald Trump’s idea of including Canada as the 51st state. Anand expressed her anticipation for the upcoming meeting where Rubio and other foreign ministers from the Group of Seven nations will convene in Ontario’s Niagara Region to address common economic and security challenges amid global uncertainties.

Emphasizing the importance of engaging in critical issues facing their countries and the world, Anand highlighted the need for earnest discussions during the G7 gathering, especially given the current geopolitical volatility. The strain in the Canada-U.S. relationship has been attributed to Trump’s tariff policies and annexation threats.

In previous meetings, Rubio clarified that the discussions were not centered on Trump’s annexation remarks, although he had conversed with Mélanie Joly, the former Canadian foreign affairs minister, regarding the issue. During the G7 leaders summit in Alberta, Trump showed respect for Canadian sovereignty in his interactions with Prime Minister Mark Carney, opting not to engage in any remarks suggesting Canada should become a U.S. state.

The focus of the upcoming G7 meeting will revolve around security, peace issues, and strategic cooperation, as outlined by the U.S. State Department. Rubio’s agenda includes advancing American interests in various areas such as peace initiatives in Ukraine and Gaza, maritime security, and supply chain resilience.

Carney, who has been instrumental in stabilizing Canadian-U.S. relations, received commendation from Trump during a White House meeting; however, negotiations were later suspended following disputes over trade policies. Anand indicated that while discussions with Rubio might not directly address trade negotiations, the multilateral efforts at the G7 summit will encompass a wide range of topics, irrespective of the trade situation.

In a bid to diversify trade relations amidst protectionist measures by the U.S., Canada has been focusing on enhancing ties with India. Efforts to restore the relationship with India faced challenges following the 2023 assassination of Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada. Anand stressed the inclusion of foreign ministers from various countries to promote a comprehensive conversation during the G7 summit, highlighting the importance of a diverse and constructive dialogue.
