Canada has officially acknowledged the State of Palestine in collaboration with global partners to uphold the potential for a two-state solution, as per a statement issued by Prime Minister Mark Carney’s office on Sunday. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) highlighted Canada’s longstanding dedication to a two-state solution, which was based on the belief that it would eventually be achieved through negotiations.
However, recent events such as the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, the Israeli parliament’s endorsement of annexing the occupied West Bank, and the Israeli government’s constraints on humanitarian assistance have significantly undermined the prospect of a two-state solution. The PMO condemned Hamas for its actions, accusing the group of terrorizing Israel and oppressing Gaza’s residents, emphasizing that Hamas cannot determine the Palestinian people’s destiny.
Moreover, the PMO criticized the current Israeli administration for actively impeding the establishment of a Palestinian state, stating that it is now the official policy of the Israeli government to oppose a Palestinian state. Prime Minister Carney expressed concerns about the diminishing likelihood of a two-state solution during the announcement.
Canada has expressed its willingness to collaborate in fostering a peaceful future for both Palestine and Israel. The decision coincides with Prime Minister Carney’s upcoming meetings with global leaders at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The United Kingdom and France are anticipated to follow Canada’s lead in recognizing the State of Palestine.
In an earlier announcement in July, Carney outlined that Canada’s recognition of Palestine was contingent upon specific commitments from the Palestinian Authority, including governance reforms, holding general elections in 2026 without Hamas participation, and demilitarizing the Palestinian state. The PMO affirmed that Canada will escalate its support for the Palestinian Authority’s reform efforts, acknowledging the progress already achieved.
The move to recognize Palestine reflects Canada’s commitment to promoting peace and stability in the region, aligning with its diplomatic objectives.
