“Canada Plans Financial Aid for Softwood Lumber Industry”

Financial assistance for the Canadian softwood lumber industry is on the horizon, as confirmed by the federal industry minister during a meeting with a business group in Fredericton. Mélanie Joly mentioned that the aid package will involve financial backing from the Business Development Bank of Canada, channeled through banks. Although Prime Minister Mark Carney had pledged $1.25 billion for the sector in August, the distribution of funds is pending.

While the exact amount designated for the New Brunswick industry was not disclosed by Joly, she assured the audience that it would be allocated based on necessity. The funding is anticipated to come in various forms, including operational support to alleviate debt burdens caused by unfair tariffs and capital investment to foster company growth.

The announcement of financial support follows the imposition of new tariffs by U.S. President Donald Trump on September 30. These tariffs include a 10% levy on softwood lumber in addition to existing tariffs, along with duties on specific finished wood products. Joly also revealed plans for a national initiative to promote the use of Canadian softwood in construction projects and household furnishings.

The federal government’s efforts aim to bolster the softwood lumber industry in Canada amidst challenging trade conditions and ensure the sector’s sustainability and growth.
