Hockey Canada and the Canadian Olympic Committee are set to announce the Olympic women’s hockey team this Friday afternoon, just before the team’s first game against Finland on Feb. 5. The Canadian team, which secured gold in Beijing in 2022, will face a tough challenge in this year’s Winter Games in Italy as they go up against a talented American team.
During the recent four-game Rivalry Series, the American team dominated the Canadians, outscoring them 24-7 and showcasing a strong team dynamic. The U.S. roster, unveiled on New Year’s Eve, boasts skilled players like captain Hilary Knight and top scorer Kendall Coyne Schofield, along with promising talents such as Caroline Harvey, Abbey Murphy, and Laila Edwards.
Canadian assistant captain Blayre Turnbull expressed disappointment with her team’s performance in the Rivalry Series, emphasizing the need for improvement. Despite the challenges, Turnbull remains optimistic about Canada’s chances to defend their gold medal at the Olympics.
Head coach Troy Ryan echoed Turnbull’s sentiments, urging the team to focus on building strong habits and teamwork to ensure success at the Games. The Olympic roster, to be revealed in Toronto on Friday, will be comprised of 23 players, with GM Gina Kingsbury tasked with finalizing the selection from a pool of 30 athletes who have been part of training camps and previous competitions.
Canada will compete in Group A alongside the United States, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and Finland. Group B includes Germany, Japan, Italy, France, and Sweden. Unlike previous years of centralized training, this year’s preparation involved three training camps and the Rivalry Series, providing less time for team cohesion.
The forward lineup is expected to feature familiar names like Marie-Philip Poulin, Sarah Fillier, and Turnbull, along with emerging talents such as Emma Maltais and Daryl Watts. The defensive lineup includes veterans like Renata Fast and Erin Ambrose, with competition for the goaltending position between Ève Gascon and Kayle Osborne.
The final roster announcements are eagerly awaited, with several players vying for spots on the team. The Canadian women’s hockey team is gearing up for a challenging yet exciting journey at the upcoming Winter Olympics in Italy.
