Canada’s 2026 World Cup journey may begin against Jordan, Cabo Verde, Ghana, or New Zealand, but they could also face Italy in their opening match at Toronto’s BMO Field on June 12. If both Canada and Mexico finish as group runners-up, they would potentially clash in the Round of 32. The official tournament pathway will be unveiled during the draw on December 5 at the John F. Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. FIFA has disclosed the draw procedure, shedding light on the possible matchups ahead.

The tournament will feature 48 teams and 104 games, with Mexico in Group A, Canada in Group B, and the United States in Group D. The co-hosts and top-ranked teams will be in Pot A, while the rest will be distributed across Pots B, C, and D. Pot D will include teams from the European playoff matches and FIFA Playoff Tournament, such as Italy, Denmark, Turkey, and others.

Canada is restricted from facing another CONCACAF team in their initial group. The decision to place playoff winners in Pot 4, alongside teams like Curacao and Haiti, aims to maintain fairness among qualified and playoff teams.

Italy’s path to the World Cup involves matchups against Northern Ireland, Wales, or Bosnia and Herzegovina. Canada is set to begin Group B play against a Pot 4 team, followed by matches against Pot 3 and Pot 2 teams in Vancouver. Possible opponents for Canada include Croatia, Morocco, Colombia, Norway, Egypt, Italy, and Denmark.

The group stage rules ensure a balanced mix of UEFA teams in each group, with 12 group winners, 12 runners-up, and eight third-place teams advancing to the knockout rounds. The top-ranked teams like Spain, Argentina, France, and England are strategically placed in the draw to avoid early clashes.

The detailed match schedule, including venues and kickoff times, will be released on December 6. Canada, ranked 41st globally, is eager to secure their first World Cup win after previous unsuccessful campaigns in 2022 and 1986. The draw pots for the 2026 World Cup outline the diverse lineup of teams across all categories.
