Swimmer Penny Oleksiak, known as Canada’s most successful female Olympian, has been handed a two-year suspension from competing due to three instances of not being available for testing. The ban has been backdated to July 15, resulting in Oleksiak being ineligible until July 14, 2027.
As per the Aquatics Integrity Unit, the 25-year-old athlete from Toronto will have all her competitive outcomes from June 16 onwards invalidated, including the loss of any medals, points, and prizes. This punishment relates to the athlete whereabouts requirements under the World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) drug testing program, where athletes must provide a one-hour availability window 90 days in advance for testing, regardless of their location globally. Failure to accurately provide this information may lead to penalties such as a Filing Failure, as highlighted by World Aquatics.
In response to the whereabouts issue, Oleksiak withdrew from the world aquatics championships in July, emphasizing that the matter did not involve any banned substances and asserting her commitment to clean sport. Any combination of three filing failures or missed tests within a year can result in a two-year suspension.
Swimming Canada’s CEO, Suzanne Paulins, expressed the organization’s dedication to upholding anti-doping regulations and ensuring fair competition for all athletes. Although understanding Oleksiak’s explanation of inadvertent errors and no use of banned substances, the enforcement of anti-doping rules remains crucial for maintaining a level playing field. The statement also conveyed hopes for Oleksiak’s return to the national team once eligible.
Oleksiak, a decorated athlete with seven Olympic medals and nine world championship medals, has accepted the consequences of her whereabouts failures and will be absent from competitive swimming until the end of her ban in 2027.
