The Canadian government has granted emergency assistance worth $76 million to Flair Airlines in response to the escalating costs of jet fuel impacting airlines financially. Len Corrado, the CEO of Flair, emphasized in an interview that this financial support demonstrates the government’s understanding of the significant challenges faced by the industry and their commitment to maintaining competitiveness.
The Canada Enterprise Emergency Funding Corp. has authorized these bailout loans to help mitigate the escalating fuel expenses and enhance the affordability of airfares. The loan, provided through a Crown corporation, comes with a repayment period of four years and carries interest rates below the prevailing market rates.
In a related development, Transat A.T. Inc., the parent company of Air Transat, has received financial aid totaling $430 million following the onset of the Iran conflict in late February. The conflict led to a surge in energy prices, causing jet fuel prices to nearly double compared to a year ago.
Furthermore, Porter Airlines has also recently benefited from a bailout loan worth $125 million, according to government reports.
