Canadian poet and essayist Anne Carson, aged 76, has been honored with the prestigious Nobel Prize in Literature by the Swedish Academy in Stockholm. She was commended for her innovative works that engage with the classical tradition to create new forms in contemporary literature.

Carson, a dual citizen of Iceland and Canada who splits her time between Reykjavik and Ann Arbor, Michigan, was caught off guard by the news of her win while in Iceland, “listening to the wind.” The literary community, including Canada’s Prime Minister, lauded her unique style and imaginative approach to reimagining classic tales.

Having studied at the University of Toronto where she obtained her bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD degrees in classics, Carson’s alma mater proudly celebrated her achievement.
