Marley Moose, a 22-year-old crew member, is dedicating her third summer to reforesting burnt areas in northern Manitoba, aiming to restore nature’s balance after devastating wildfires. However, the task has become more daunting following the discontinuation of a government initiative that intended to plant two billion trees by 2030.
In 2016, a forest in Manitoba’s Interlake region was decimated by a jack pine budworm infestation. Though it was in the process of regeneration, the area fell victim to wildfires in 2021, with neighboring regions already ablaze this spring.
Marley Moose, part of a tree-planting program by Nekoté LP representing seven Swampy Cree First Nations, expressed a deep connection to the land and emphasized the importance of caring for it to ensure reciprocity from the earth.
The Canadian Tree Nursery Association highlighted the urgent need to combat tree loss, exacerbated by factors such as deforestation, beetle infestations, and wildfires that have ravaged a significant portion of Canada’s forests in recent years.
The cancellation of the 2 Billion Trees Program, a federal initiative spearheaded by former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, has left tree-planting projects like Nekoté LP’s in limbo, jeopardizing their efforts to restore and protect vital forest ecosystems.
With Canada facing consecutive severe fire seasons and a concerning carbon balance in managed forests, stakeholders in the forestry industry are collaborating to find alternative solutions following the program’s cancellation.
Farron Sharp, a project manager with Blue-Green Planet Project, is seeking additional funding to sustain tree-planting initiatives, emphasizing the critical role of reforestation in mitigating the environmental impact of human activities like fossil fuel consumption and unsustainable logging practices.
As Marley Moose and her team continue their laborious tree-planting work, they envision a future where subsequent generations can enjoy the rejuvenated forests, highlighting the long-term benefits of their conservation efforts.
