Carlos Alcaraz will have to wait another year to achieve his goal of bringing home the Davis Cup for Spain. The top-seeded Alcaraz expressed his disappointment as he pulled out of the Davis Cup Finals in Italy due to a hamstring injury on Tuesday. Doctors advised him to make this decision.
Expressing regret, Alcaraz stated, “I regret to inform you that I won’t be representing Spain in the Davis Cup in Bologna.” He explained that he has a right hamstring edema and that medical professionals have advised against competing. The injury occurred during the ATP Finals last week, where he was diagnosed with muscle overload and swelling in his right hamstring. Alcaraz mentioned that he is returning home with a heavy heart since playing for Spain has always been a significant honor for him, and he was eagerly anticipating contributing to their Davis Cup campaign.
In a video call on Tuesday to promote upcoming exhibition matches in New Jersey and Florida, Alcaraz reassured reporters that he is not concerned about any long-term repercussions from the leg injury. He plans to undergo daily treatment and exercises to facilitate a speedy recovery.
Alcaraz made his Davis Cup debut in 2022 and holds a 6-2 overall record, with a 5-1 record in singles matches. Spain last clinched the Davis Cup title in 2019. He was also absent from the 2023 Davis Cup due to fitness concerns. In the previous year, Alcaraz and the Spanish team were eliminated in the opening round of the Final 8 in Malaga, marking the end of Rafael Nadal’s illustrious career.
The 22-year-old Alcaraz has expressed his desire to win the Davis Cup in the future, considering it a highly prestigious tournament. Initially set to lead Spain against the No. 4-seeded Czech Republic in the quarterfinals in Bologna, Alcaraz had already secured the year-end No. 1 ranking before his recent defeat to Sinner in Turin. Alcaraz, who claimed the year-end No. 1 spot in 2022 at the age of 19, has won six Grand Slam titles this year, including victories at the French Open and U.S. Open. Spain’s opponents, the Czech Republic, feature top-20 players Jiri Lehecka and Jakub Mensik, who ousted the United States in the qualifying round in September.
