A judge has deferred her decision on sentencing a former director of a private Christian school in Saskatoon who was found guilty of nine counts of assault with a weapon. John Olubobokun was convicted of using a wooden paddle to strike students while he served as the director at Christian Centre Academy from 2003 for four years. The institution was later renamed as Legacy Christian Academy and then Valour Academy.

During the trial last year, former students testified that they were frequently accused of misbehaving, summoned to the director’s office, instructed to bend over a desk or chair, and repeatedly hit with a wooden paddle. In a victim impact statement, Coy Nolin emotionally expressed that the abuse inflicted by Olubobokun had deeply wounded him, leading to persistent nightmares. Nolin highlighted how religion was weaponized by Olubobokun to instill shame in him.

Another victim, Nolan Blackstock, shared that the abuse had burdened him with enduring psychological struggles and suicidal thoughts. Despite the ordeal, Blackstock emphasized his determination not to allow the perpetrator to triumph over him.

Caitlin Erickson spoke about the pervasive impact of the abuse on her life, revealing that she had spent 18 years in therapy to cope with the trauma. However, with the support of friends and advocates, she now feels empowered to confront the past.

The Crown prosecutor recommended a two-year jail term followed by three years of probation, prohibiting Olubobokun from supervising individuals under 15. In contrast, the defense team sought a conditional discharge with 18 months of probation, aiming to prevent the convictions from being recorded if Olubobokun complies with the probation terms. Defense lawyer Ron Piché underscored Olubobokun’s clean record and professional standing, emphasizing the severe financial repercussions and potential ruin a criminal record could bring.

Judge Lisa Watson postponed the sentencing decision for a later date to carefully consider the arguments presented in court.
