French Open champion Coco Gauff had a challenging match against Canadian player Leylah Fernandez at the China Open in Beijing. In other matches held on Sunday, Eva Lys defeated Elena Rybakina 6-3, 1-6, 6-4, while American McCartney Kessler was leading Barbora Krejcikova 1-6, 7-5, 3-0 before Krejcikova retired from the match.
The tournament is running alongside an ATP 500 men’s event, where second-seeded Alexander Zverev made a comeback from a break down in the final set to beat Corentin Moutet 7-5, 3-6, 6-3. Zverev is now set to face Daniil Medvedev in the quarterfinals, with Medvedev defeating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-3, 6-3 in his match.
Italian player Lorenzo Musetti, who recently issued an apology to Chinese fans, had a successful straight-sets victory over Adrian Mannarino with a score of 6-3, 6-3. Learner Tien also secured a win against Flavio Cobolli 6-3, 6-2, setting up a quarterfinal clash with the ninth-ranked Musetti.
