“Comedian Liz Miele Loses Earnings as SiriusXM Axes Comedy Channel”

Share

Comedian Liz Miele has recently faced a significant loss in her earnings, a situation shared by many others. SiriusXM has decided to discontinue its Raw Comedy/Raw Dog channel, which previously showcased over 800 comedians in rotation. This move led to the channel being replaced by a new one owned by renowned comedian Sebastian Maniscalco.

As a result, Miele and numerous working-class comedians have been deprived of a vital income source and visibility, with established celebrity comics dominating the platform. Miele expressed how last year’s financial struggles were alleviated by SiriusXM, emphasizing the impact on fellow comedians facing personal challenges like caring for sick relatives or newborns.

While Maniscalco and SiriusXM have pledged to provide opportunities for comedians at various career stages, data from the industry advocacy group Stand Up for Standup paints a contrasting picture. The group revealed that the rebranded channel featured only 275 comedians last month, with a significant portion of plays directed towards the top 50 artists, such as Chris Rock, Kevin Hart, and Jim Gaffigan.

Formerly a top performer on the channel, Miele criticized the shift as a consolidation of wealth, contrasting the previous diverse earnings distribution with the current scenario favoring a select few. The absence of platforms like SiriusXM raises concerns for upcoming comedians hoping to emulate Maniscalco’s success without industry connections.

Canadian comedian Danish Anwar shared how his royalties from Raw Comedy plummeted by 30 to 40 percent, impacting many colleagues who relied on the channel for financial stability. The situation is particularly challenging for Canadian comedians seeking career opportunities in the U.S., where SiriusXM royalties often support their work visas.

In response to the backlash, popular comedians like Patton Oswalt and Michelle Wolf have called for support for emerging comedians on the platform. Maniscalco clarified that he was not involved in the decision to end Raw Comedy, with SiriusXM citing the channel’s underperformance as the reason for the change.

Moving forward, Maniscalco aims to collaborate with SiriusXM to ensure a diverse representation of comedic voices on his channel, acknowledging the hardships faced by emerging talents. However, Anwar remains skeptical and emphasizes the need for tangible support rather than mere statements amidst the financial challenges brought about by the channel’s overhaul.

As the comedy industry grapples with these shifts, Toronto-born comedian Steph Tolev highlights the importance of collective action, drawing parallels to a past instance where community pressure reversed a similar decision by Just For Laughs regarding SiriusXM’s Canada Laughs channel. Anwar stresses the necessity of unity and improved industry practices to navigate the current upheaval, emphasizing the financial impact felt by many comedians in the aftermath of the channel changes.
