Representing Canada in the Billie Jean King Cup Group A playoffs in Monterrey, Mexico, Ottawa’s doubles star Gabriela Dabrowski and Toronto’s Victoria Mboko secured a victory against Denmark on Saturday. The dynamic duo, who had already played a singles match, triumphed over Emma Kamper and Johanne Christine Svendsen of Denmark in the doubles match, winning 6-2, 6-4 in 59 minutes to clinch the series 2-1.

During the match, the Canadian team displayed a strong performance with four aces and just one double fault, claiming 62 out of the 100 points available. They also successfully converted three break points. The next challenge for Dabrowski and Mboko is a crucial faceoff against Mexico on Sunday at 5 p.m. ET, where the winner will progress to the 2026 qualifiers. Mexico secured a 2-1 victory over Denmark in their previous Group A playoff match.

The upcoming Canada-Mexico match will be broadcast live on CBC Sports and CBC Gem. Mboko, in a remarkable display of skill, defeated Christine Svendsen 7-5, 6-3 in one hour and 24 minutes, leveling the Group A playoff match at 1-1.

Reflecting on her stellar performance, Mboko mentioned in an on-court interview that she focused on taking it one point at a time and maintaining self-belief, especially when Canada was trailing 1-0. She dominated the game with 11 aces and an 86% success rate on first serve points. In contrast, her opponent struggled with no aces, four double faults, and only a 63% success rate on first serves.

In other matches, Toronto’s Cadence Brace faced a tough three-set loss to Rebecca Munk Mortensen in the opener. Brace, aged 20, won the first set 6-3 but couldn’t maintain the lead, eventually losing the next two sets 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4) in a marathon match lasting three hours and 41 minutes. Both players showed a competitive spirit, with Brace recording two aces and six double faults, while Munk Mortensen delivered four aces and eight double faults.

The statistical comparison between the players revealed a close contest, with Denmark’s player having a slight advantage in break points won, break points saved, and match points saved.
