After 43 years of correspondence, two long-time pen pals, one hailing from Newfoundland and the other from Singapore, finally met face-to-face this week. Sonya Clarke Casey expressed their longstanding bond by stating, “We’ve shared our highs and lows through letters, always signing off with the hope of meeting one day, although it seemed like a distant dream.” Clarke Casey and Michelle Anne Ng initially connected in 1983 through a school pen pal program when they were in Grade 5, and their written communication continued uninterrupted over the years.

The women, seated together in St. John’s, reminisced about the vast collection of letters they had maintained for decades, filled with handwritten messages, decorative stationery, and personal drawings. Ng shared a particularly lengthy letter mentioning her fondness for the song “99 Luftballoons,” which Clarke Casey vividly recalled receiving with excitement. The exchange of letters allowed them to learn about each other’s lives across the globe, from local teenage fashion trends in Singapore to notable events in Newfoundland.

Despite the evolution of technology, including email and FaceTime, the friends remained committed to sending handwritten letters, emphasizing the unique joy of receiving mail. Clarke Casey reflected on the significance of these letters in preserving memories and documenting life events. The anticipation and emotional connection fostered through written correspondence culminated in their long-awaited meeting, with Ng traveling to meet Clarke Casey in Newfoundland.

The reunion was filled with tears of joy and heartfelt embraces as the friends met in person for the first time after four decades of letter writing. They spent their initial moments together revisiting old letters, sharing laughter, and reliving cherished memories. While the meeting marked a significant milestone in their friendship, they both affirmed their commitment to continue exchanging letters, believing that their bond would endure through the years to come.

The enduring friendship between Sonya Clarke Casey and Michelle Anne Ng serves as a testament to the power of written communication and the lasting connections it can foster, transcending geographical boundaries and time.
