Denare Beach residents fondly remember Rhonda Werbicki’s house as the ultimate Halloween destination in their village. Sadly, Werbicki’s home fell victim to a devastating wildfire on June 2, which also razed over 200 other dwellings in the region, including many on the adjacent Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation reserve.
Currently residing in Gimli, Manitoba, about 750 kilometers away, Werbicki and her husband returned to Denare Beach to oversee the cleanup efforts. The wildfire upended Werbicki’s life, causing her to miss her usual routines and gatherings with friends.
Despite the tragedy, Denare Beach residents are striving to find solace in everyday conversations about mundane topics like Halloween and sports.
