Jeff Gerstmann chuckled in disbelief recently upon hearing the news that the renowned late rapper Tupac Shakur would be digitally featured in an upcoming video game. The veteran games journalist and commentator found the announcement quite absurd, questioning the decision as ridiculous.

The revelation during the Summer Game Fest, an annual event showcasing video game trailers and marketing buzz, left many gamers and influencers surprised and puzzled by the unexpected inclusion of the influential American rapper and activist who passed away in 1996.

The game, called “Stranger Than Heaven,” is currently in development by Japan-based Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, a subsidiary of Sega. Acting as a prequel to the long-standing “Like a Dragon” series, also known as “Yakuza,” the game spans approximately 50 years in the early 1900s.

This move marks the latest in a series of unconventional choices by the studio, drawing increasing skepticism and raising questions about the intentions of Tupac’s estate regarding his enduring legacy.

Tupac’s character in the game, named Amaru after his actual middle name, was disclosed without further details on his role. The developers emphasized their meticulous approach in honoring Tupac’s legacy, ensuring close collaboration without the use of AI, including designing his character based on archival materials.

Snoop Dogg, who is also featured in the game alongside his son Cordell Broadus, indicated close collaboration with Tupac’s estate on the project, highlighting the decision to incorporate Tupac as a natural fit due to his enduring influence and spirit.

RGG Studio head Masayoshi Yokoyama confirmed seeking approval from both Tupac’s estate and surviving family members for the controversial inclusion of Tupac in “Stranger Than Heaven.”

The involvement of Snoop Dogg in the project did not surprise Gerstmann, given Snoop’s widespread presence in popular culture over the years. However, he expressed concerns about potential overexposure of Tupac’s likeness posthumously, fearing it could diminish the artist’s mystique.

Controlled by music executive Tom Whalley, Tupac’s estate has faced controversy in recent years, including legal disputes and contentious commercial ventures, such as NFT sales of Tupac’s images.

The incorporation of Tupac in a game in 2026 has sparked mixed reactions. While RGG Studio has a reputation for creating cool games, the decision to feature Tupac has been perceived as out of touch by some observers, especially following changes within the studio’s creative team.

The conversation around digitally recreating deceased personalities like Tupac has become more complex with advancements in technology, raising ethical and artistic considerations about reanimating the deceased in various forms.

The juxtaposition of featuring Tupac in a game centered on gangland crime has raised concerns about the implications and appropriateness of such a depiction, despite the historical and cultural differences between the game’s setting and Tupac’s background.

Despite the controversies, some experts see potential connections between Tupac’s persona and the themes of the game, acknowledging the intricate nature of Tupac’s legacy and the varied aspects of his character that can be highlighted.

Overall, opinions on Tupac’s inclusion in the game vary, with some seeing it as a creative choice that adds a unique dimension to the gaming experience, while others question the motivations and implications of incorporating such a iconic figure in a virtual setting.
