A state of local emergency has been announced by the Thompson-Nicola Regional District in the British Columbia Interior due to the imminent threat of an illegal dam collapsing. The district has issued an evacuation alert for 14 properties downstream from the unauthorized structure at Fadear Lake.
The potential failure of the dam could result in an uncontrolled release of water into Fadear Creek, located approximately 45 kilometers northeast of Kamloops. Residents living along Fadear Creek were advised to be prepared for a rapid evacuation in light of the escalating risk posed by the dam.
The regional district’s declaration of a local state of emergency empowers authorities to take necessary actions to reduce the flood hazard and safeguard the affected area. This measure grants officials the ability to mandate evacuations, restrict travel, and access private properties in circumstances where lives or assets are in jeopardy.
Colton Davies, a spokesperson for the Thompson-Nicola Regional District, explained that the dam, situated at the northern end of Fadear Lake, is facing obstruction issues with its culverts, leading to a rise in the lake’s water level. Concerns have emerged that the elevated water level might lead to overflow, potentially causing the dam to breach.
The origins of the dam remain unclear, with Davies highlighting the challenges associated with accessing the remote lake area where the structure is located. Despite the uncertainties surrounding its construction, efforts are underway to address the situation and ensure the safety of the region’s residents.
The Ministry of Water, Land, and Resource Stewardship has prioritized safeguarding public safety in response to the crisis. An engineer has been engaged to evaluate the condition of the dam and develop a strategic plan for managing the unfolding events.
