“Energy Minister Hodgson Apologizes for Dismissive Remarks”

Federal Energy Minister Tim Hodgson has expressed regret for his choice of words during a proposed meeting with Coastal First Nations in Vancouver. The minister offered to meet with the alliance of nine First Nations who oppose a bitumen pipeline to the northern B.C. coast following an agreement between Ottawa and Alberta. Hodgson dismissed concerns raised by the group’s president, Marilyn Slett, regarding the short notice of the meeting, suggesting a virtual meeting using Zoom.

Approximately 24 hours after his initial remarks, Hodgson extended an apology to the group, acknowledging that his comments about a virtual meeting were ill-advised. He stated on social media that he had reached out to them directly to apologize and was looking forward to an in-person meeting at their convenience.

Slett criticized Hodgson’s initial comments as disrespectful and indicative of a lack of understanding of their communities. She emphasized the importance of productive relationships and respectful dialogue with the government to continue their collaborative efforts in the Great Bear Rainforest and Sea.

Despite the initial misstep, Hodgson expressed willingness to travel and meet with the group in person following his suggestion of a virtual meeting.
