“Experts Laud Social Media’s Account Location Feature Amid Caution”

Canadian researchers specializing in tracking online misinformation and foreign interference have expressed approval for a new feature introduced by a social media platform, which discloses the geographical location of user accounts. However, they caution that the feature is not flawless and advise interpreting its results with caution.

The unveiling of true account locations holds the potential to expose fake accounts and foreign entities posing as Canadians to influence political discourse. Nevertheless, researchers highlight potential risks, such as endangering dissidents by revealing their whereabouts or the utilization of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) for online communication.

The recent introduction of the “about this account” feature by X, formerly known as Twitter, aims to enhance transparency regarding the location of accounts. The rollout surprised many users and prompted swift reactions, leading to a surge in activities by individuals in the U.S. and Canada seeking discrepancies between stated and actual account locations.

Several influential accounts supporting the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement were discovered to be based outside the U.S., including in regions such as Eastern Europe, Russia, and Nigeria. This revelation raised suspicions about potential foreign influence on the movement. Similarly, accounts purportedly from Gaza soliciting donations were found to be located in other countries like India.

Notably, discrepancies in account location information were also identified in accounts engaging with Canadian politics. For instance, a prominent Conservative-leaning account with over 150,000 followers was listed as being in Italy, while an account advocating for Alberta sovereignty with 15,000 followers was indicated to be based in Thailand.

Moreover, some federal political parties and media organizations, including the CBC, were erroneously listed as being located outside Canada. While certain party accounts were correctly placed in Canada, others, like the Liberal Party and New Democrat accounts, were inaccurately depicted as being in the United States.

Experts attribute potential inaccuracies in the feature to the utilization of IP addresses associated with accounts to determine their locations. While the tool is deemed beneficial for researchers, concerns linger over its impact on individuals seeking to safeguard their location for safety reasons, particularly activists and journalists using VPNs.

Despite initial errors, the feature is seen as aiding in identifying accounts involved in foreign interference. Researchers emphasize the importance of critical thinking when interpreting location data online, as it serves as an additional tool to assess the credibility of content encountered on social media platforms.
